Late 19th century, Chile acquired most of its territiry. During the 1880s War of the Pacific, it battled Peru and Bolivia for control of the lucrative, nitrate-rich land to the north. The Chileans snatched up Peru's southern tip and Bolivia's entire Pacific coast. Bolivia is landlocked til this day.
Chile ammassed the bottom one-third of its territory at that time, conquering the strip of land south of the BiobĂo River that belonged for centuries to the indigenous Mapuche people. Although the Mapuche repeatedly resisted the Incan and Spanish Empires, the Mapuche were defeated by the Chilean army.
